F1 teams up with global leaders Aggreko to implement low-carbon power systems at European Grands Prix, marking a stride toward its net zero ambition

Formula 1 (F1) is on the fast track to a sustainable future, debunking myths of indifference towards global ecological concerns by spearheading initiatives that promise to reduce its carbon footprint significantly.

Far from living in the shadow of its reputation for high fuel consumption, F1, alongside a dedicated sustainability crew, is hard at work forging alliances with leading global companies.

Their mission: to turn the vision of a sustainable future into reality, one race at a time.

Ever since its first race in 1950, F1 has captivated millions of fans worldwide, offering them a front-row glimpse into the electrifying world of high-speed motor racing.

Eco-friendly power on the Grand Prix circuit

Forming a dynamic partnership with Aggreko, a powerhouse in temporary energy solutions, F1 is set to revolutionise the power landscape of European Grands Prix from 2025.

This collaboration is a cornerstone of F1's ambitious plan to hit the net zero mark by 2030.

Aggreko’s role as an official F1 Provider underscores a shared commitment to greener motorsport, with both dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of their events.

“The entire paddock is part of our net zero by 2030 commitment and solutions like the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action,” said Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1.

“In practice, this means that we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this space — and we look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”

F1 and Aggreko: A groundbreaking collaboration

The seeds of this promising alliance were sown in 2023 at the Austrian Grand Prix, where a pilot introduced a centralised power generation unit powered by renewable energy sources. The result? A dramatic carbon emissions cut by over 90% from the previous year, proving the massive potential for a greener approach to power at major sporting events.

The success story continued at the Red Bull Ring and the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, paving the way for the system’s rollout across Europe by 2025. This move will see the F1 teams, the FIA and other partners saying goodbye to individual generators in favour of this centralised, more eco-friendly power source.

“As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition and we’re thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to help them on their journey to be carbon net zero by 2030. We look forward to continuing working with Formula 1 and together energising change for a positive future.”

Aggreko's commitment to sustainability extends to its partnership with Formula E, aiming for a 45% emission reduction by 2030, as outlined here.

But the journey doesn’t stop with energy solutions. Formula 1 is vigorously pursuing a host of sustainable measures, including transitioning to renewable energy sources at races and introducing 100% sustainable fuels by 2026.

Furthermore, logistics improvements, such as adopting biofuel-powered transportation and enhancing sea freight operations, have significantly cut down emissions, demonstrating Formula 1’s serious commitment to a greener planet.
