Digital innovations for a sustainable world

Expanding on a partnership initiated two years ago, SLB and Aramco are merging their forces to devise, commercialise and apply digital systems aimed at trimming industrial emissions.

These innovations will be integrated into SLB’s digital sustainability platform, addressing one of the most significant challenges of our time.

“Data is essential to support increasing calls for emissions transparency and taking decisive actions on decarbonisation investments,” Rakesh Jaggi, President of Digital and Integration at SLB said. “The digital sustainability platform provides the means to leverage data at scale to drive emission reduction outcomes.

“We aim to expand the SLB suite of solutions with Aramco’s innovative technologies.”

Walid A. Al Naeem, Aramco Engineering VP & Chief Engineer, added: “For several years, Aramco has been working towards mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from its operations with its own internally developed technologies.

“This agreement marks another milestone in our partnership with SLB, to bring our innovation and expertise to the global energy and industrial market.”

A Strategic Move Against Emissions

SLB and Aramco plan to develop a variety of digital solutions through SLB’s digital sustainability platform, aiming for a considerable positive impact on the environment.

Among these, Aramco’s proprietary Combined Heat Power (CHP) optimisation technology looks to boost energy efficiency.

Alongside, the Flare Monitoring System (FMS) solution is set to diminish field emissions.

There’s also a joint venture on a new planning solution for decarbonisation, enabling emissions forecasting and scenario simulations to find the most effective ways to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Emissions data insights

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy-related CO₂ emissions soared to a new high of 36.8Gt in 2022, marking a 0.9% increase from 2021, with power and transport sectors as key contributors.

The IEA further highlights the significant role of industrial activities in global emissions, with CO₂ emissions rebounding to pre-pandemic levels in 2021, driven notably by the cement, steel and chemicals industries.

Manufacturing and construction emerge as top emitters, following closely after electricity and transportation initiatives.

Beyond emissions: SLB and Aramco's sustainability pursuits

In the face of increasing digitalisation within the energy sector, the threat from cyber adversaries is escalating.

As a countermeasure, SLB and Palo Alto Networks have teamed up to address the surge in cyber threats, merging cloud competencies and AI-driven cybersecurity measures to fortify the energy industry’s defences.

This digital-first strategy propels SLB towards heightened efficiency and collaborative innovation, fostering a more sustainable energy landscape.

Olivier Le Peuch, CEO of SLB

SLB’s CEO Olivier Le Peuch says his role is to “enable our people to deliver their best — innovation, creativity and performance — to respond to the needs of an evolving energy industry”.

Meanwhile, Aramco, the world’s premier energy firm and a behemoth in global business, is championing R&D through a long-term collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

The partnership will see Aramco inject US$100m into KAUST over a decade-long period.

Amin H. Nasser, President and CEO of Saudi Aramco

Aramco’s President and CEO Amin H. Nasser said the investment reflects “our firm belief in the importance of innovation across industries and applications”.
