NetApp: An Eco-Friendly Data Quest with Aston Martin F1
The spotlight is on NetApp’s partnership with the Aston Martin Formula One team in an episode of The Futurist’s latest series on Amazon Prime.
The Sustainable Future, a cutting-edge documentary series, delves into the ecological impact of data storage and highlights the pressing need for more eco-friendly solutions.
This narrative unfolds with the Aston Martin F1 team joining forces with NetApp, showcasing their concerted effort towards data sustainability.
The growing data dilemma
The series sheds light on a startling projection: by next year, the world is set to produce an astronomical 175 zettabytes (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes) of data annually.
Looking ahead to 2030, this figure could skyrocket to a yottabyte of data (one with 24 zeros), painting a picture where every person on the planet is metaphorically carrying around 500 iPhones.
This explosion in data generation isn't without consequence. Currently, data centres consume 2% of global electricity, a figure that’s anticipated to quadruple by 2030. This surge is fuelled by the growing reliance on technologies such as AI, IoT and cloud computing.
Ian Khan, host of The Futurist, said: “It has been an educational experience to discover the sheer scale of the challenge when it comes to sustainable data storage and the urgency of a solution.
“NetApp is empowering businesses to use data as the asset it is, while at the same time supporting the equally pressing need to reduce carbon footprints.”
Complicating matters is the fact that 68% of data stored is never reused, yet it continues to guzzle energy.
A call to corporate responsibility
Matt Watts, NetApp’s Chief Technology Evangelist, believes that the corporate world must re-evaluate their approach to data storage.
He said: "The environmental impact of data storage must be higher on any organisation’s sustainability agenda and I’m proud to have participated in the Sustainable Future to raise awareness about this critical issue.
“The role of intelligent data infrastructure cannot be overstated in the overall sustainability transition and NetApp is ready to support every business with this journey as we progress towards critical sustainability goals.”
NetApp x Aston Martin F1: A revolution in data utilisation
The story illustrates how properly analysed data can illuminate pathways to greater energy efficiency and highlight areas for emission reduction, turning a problem into a solution.
With NetApp’s smart data infrastructure, the Aston Martin F1 team is now equipped to streamline data storage energy usage and harness data-driven insights for improved race-day performance, all while marching towards its sustainability targets.
Aston Martin Formula One Team CIO Clare Lansley says: “The digital world is founded on data and lots of it.
“Analytics, machine learning and now, artificial intelligence, all require access to vast volumes of data.
“But at the same time, compute and storage consume a considerable amount of power.
“That’s why teaming up with world-class partners like NetApp is proving a key enabler to achieving our sustainability goals and giving us greater control over our data.”
