As the global need for AI expands across industries, there is a simultaneous drive to minimise energy usage associated with these data-intensive tasks.

The Fujitsu and AMD partnership is an effort to bring energy-efficient solutions that are essential as businesses increasingly adopt AI-powered tools, such as generative AI.

Combining resources for powerful tech

Fujitsu and AMD's partnership combines the strengths of each company’s hardware and software.

Fujitsu will contribute its advanced CPU technology based on its renowned supercomputer systems, using Arm-based architecture to optimise energy efficiency.

AMD will bring its powerful Instinct accelerators and open-source software, designed to improve AI and HPC software capabilities at great speed whilst reducing energy consumption.

Combining these technologies, the partners offer a highly flexible AI/HPC software environment, to combine high-performance output with lower energy consumption and cost.

Phil Guido, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at AMD, says: “Our strategic partnership with Fujitsu not only underscores our commitment to innovation.

“It also highlights our dedication to Japan, where we recognise the importance of local partnerships and expertise.”

The partnership’s focus on Japan reflects a broader commitment to supporting sustainable tech solutions in local markets, encouraging similar initiatives globally.

Expanding open-source ecosystems

A significant feature of this collaboration is the open-source approach to development.

By supporting open-source ecosystems, the pair hope to foster more innovation and allow users to adapt solutions to their needs while benefiting from reduced costs and greater flexibility.

Fujitsu's Vivek Mahajan, Corporate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, explains: “We seek to create an environment in which more companies will be able to utilise AI while reducing the power consumed by data centres.”

This collaboration signals a larger shift towards sustainable technology in computing infrastructure, by providing ways to reduce carbon footprint, this partnership could be part of the solution.

Smaller organisations are able to access the resources provided, Fujitsu and AMD aim to increase participation across industries in sustainable and scalable tech solutions.

The joint customer centre demonstrates AI capabilities in various applications and promotes solutions that could be implemented across sectors, from industrial and scientific research to healthcare and finance.

Sustainable AI integration by 2027

The partnership’s vision extends to 2027, with both companies aiming to develop robust, energy-efficient AI and HPC platforms for large-scale applications.

The companies believe that by combining their hardware and software innovations, they can significantly lower the total cost of ownership for data centres, supporting more sustainable business models.

The U.S., China, and Europe lead in climate tech funding, with 75% of Venture capital funding in 10 countries

For Fujitsu and AMD, developing platforms that can handle the rigorous demands of AI applications without requiring energy-intensive infrastructures is essential for green technology.

Vivek says: “I believe that this partnership is an important step forward in accelerating Fujitsu’s efforts to achieve a sustainable society.”

Through this collaboration, Fujitsu and AMD are aligning their work not just with industry needs but with global sustainability goals, potentially shaping a new era of environmentally-conscious technology.
