What Climate Tech Has Walmart Adopted in its New US HQ?
Walmart has taken the wraps off its innovatively designed New Home Office campus in Bentonville, Arkansas — celebrating 60 years in its founding city.
This pioneering project isn’t just a workspace but a vibrant hub equipped with shops, an impressive array of 750,000 native plants and 300 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
Cindi Marsiglio, SVP, Corporate Real Estate, Walmart, says: “This is a moment I’ve been dreaming about for years.
“After lots of planning, ground-breaking ceremonies and hard hat tours, we’re celebrating the opening of our New Home Office campus in Bentonville. And wow, what a place it is.”
Future and legacy
For Cindi and the team, this campus represents more than just geographical expansion.
“It’s a world-class campus, Walmart style — one that genuinely mirrors our core values and mission, respects our legacy and fuels our future,” Cindi says.
Employee input played a crucial role in shaping the campus, with thousands pitching in on everything from architectural designs to wellness amenities and dining options.
Cindi adds: “Whether it’s natural light flooding every corner, convenient parking options, fitness and childcare facilities, or expanded food choices at 8th & Plate, the goal was simple: to create a workplace where associates can thrive.
“This campus is proof of what’s possible when we put people first.”
The site also hosts a diverse array of retail outlets like Bentonville Bicycle Company, Flyway Brewing, Gearhead Outfitters, The Gent's Place, Hatch Early Mood Food, Jamba Juice, Riserva Bar + Tapas, Swig, Walmart Pharmacy, Wright’s BBQ and Yokozuna Sushi, enriching the communal feel of the campus.
Smart, sustainable design
The architectural strategies behind the campus were deeply infused with sustainable and technological advancements.
Constructed using the United States' largest application of mass timber, the buildings aim to achieve the prestigious LEED Platinum certification.Environment-friendly features span across the campus, dedicating half of its layout to green spaces populated with native flora and approximately 5,000 trees.
Additional sustainable tech includes dynamic glass that conservatively manages energy use, drone technology for window cleaning and autonomous machines for lawn maintenance — showcasing a blend of innovation and practicality in building operations.
Seal of approval from the CSO
Kathleen McLaughlin, EVP and Chief Sustainability Officer at Walmart and Sustainability Magazine’s Number One in the Top 100 Women 2024, says: “I am inspired by the ingenuity of the many people who designed and built the campus; it is a tangible example of our ongoing commitment to associate well-being and to sustainability.”
The on-campus lakes span 13 acres, capturing and cleaning rainwater — expected to supply over 52 million gallons of water annually.
“This drive to reduce, reuse and recycle resources is core to our company’s zero waste ethos and an important part of our every-day-low cost culture,” she adds
The campus also includes on-site childcare, while the Walton Whole Health and Fitness Center provides associates access to classes, facilities and events.
The campus additionally supports comprehensive wellbeing with its Walton Whole Health and Fitness Center, alongside on-site childcare. It extends community engagement through miles of trails that integrate into the local Razorback Greenway, connecting people with the natural beauty of the Ozarks.
Kathleen says: “I am excited about the opportunities for collaboration this new campus will bring for fellow associates and the wider community.”
