Capgemini's insightful analysis brings to light the essential nature of climate technology, with a strong consensus among executives that it's crucial for achieving their sustainability targets.

Despite an acknowledgment that the adoption of such technology could lead to higher product costs due to significant 'green' premiums, it's evident that the primary challenge lies not in the lack of solutions but in overcoming financial and access barriers to leverage these technologies fully against greenhouse gas emissions.

Florent Andrillon, the Global Head of Climate Tech at Capgemini, emphasises: “As the world races to find solutions to address climate change, we can see there is an extraordinary appetite for these technologies, supported by an increased awareness on the urgency to act. We are in the beginning of a ‘clean industrial revolution’.

“Before climate technologies reach cost parity with their traditional counterparts, businesses or consumers can’t be expected to handle large green premiums alone. Public policies need to level the playing field and adequately support the scaling up. Consumers and organisations alike understand the need to quickly adapt their behaviours, and that solutions exist. It will take increased intervention from governments to support and speed up that paradigm shift for industry and end-users alike.”

Exploring climate tech

Climate tech represents a targeted attack on the escalating climate crisis, encompassing a varied suite of technologies dedicated to mitigating climate change.

This includes vital sectors like EVs, carbon capture and storage, alongside green hydrogen and renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal.

The rapid pace of climate tech adoption

Despite existing barriers, the uptake of climate tech is steadily increasing, thanks to decreasing green premiums which enable easier access.

This is especially notable in sectors like solar photovoltaic (PV) and EVs, paving the way for broader application across industries facing higher premiums, such as carbon capture for cement, green hydrogen for steel production, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for aviation.
