The plan for LEGO's Innovation Centre
We look at the articles that made the news across the climate tech space 2024. Today, it is November’s turn, featuring LEGO, Coca-Cola, UBS and COP

LEGO Sets Foundation for Future with New Innovation Campus

LEGO has initiated construction of its groundbreaking 50,000m² Innovation Campus, a part designed by its employees and using its iconic bricks.

This global hub aimed at advancing product and design excellence is set to open its doors in Billund, Denmark by 2027.

LEGO says: “Innovation Campus will house all aspects of our development process, from the conception and design of physical products to immersive digital experiences, under one roof.

“The campus is designed with creativity and sustainability at its core and is part of our investment in creating world-class workplaces where colleagues feel supported to do their best work.”

The ceremonial first dig at the site was led by CEO Niels B Christiansen and Chief Product and Marketing Officer Julia Goldin.

This new building will bring together 1,700 creative minds from various departments including marketing, development, gaming, product and quality teams. This fusion of talent will include the company's over 600 designers, all sharing a singular innovative space.

Moreover, this facility will feature the world's largest library of LEGO elements, boasting approximately 20,000 unique LEGO pieces in 70 distinct colours.

LEGO’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions is well recognised globally.

It recently ranked among Sustainability Magazine's Top 250 Companies 2024.

Niels says: “I am thrilled to mark the beginning of construction of another new campus as we continue to invest in attractive workplaces for our colleagues around the world.

“Not only is the building design creative at its core — it is also true to our sustainability ambitions, including our commitment to reducing carbon emissions.”

Coca-Cola & Heineken Fast-Track Beverage Decarbonisation

The REfresh Alliance brings together leading beverage companies, including Coca-Cola and Heineken, in a collective mission to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy across the supply chain.

This ambitious initiative highlights a growing awareness within the industry of the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions and move towards Net Zero goals.

These are the companies currently part of the REfresh Alliance:
  • Bacardi
  • Carlsberg Group
  • Constellation Brands
  • Diageo
  • HEINEKEN
  • Molson Coors Beverage Company
  • Pernod Ricard
  • The Coca-Cola Company
  • Whyte & Mackay

At the heart of the REfresh Alliance is a commitment to not just adopt renewable energy but to spread knowledge and facilitate access to resources throughout the industry.

Managed by Enel X, a company known for its energy solutions, the alliance provides beverage companies with connections to renewable energy providers, best industry practices and advisory support.

This kind of direct support simplifies the complex challenges of transitioning towards more sustainable practices. To further bolster its goals, the alliance has also launched an educational platform specifically for the industry.

This resource is designed to empower companies with the necessary skills and knowledge about renewable energy initiatives, creating a well-informed community that can stride confidently towards sustainability.

This strategic pooling of resources and information sharing promises to significantly reduce costs and energy footprints for individual companies, achieving economies of scale that would be challenging to reach in isolation.

The combined effort also serves to make broad-scale changes more feasible, quickening the pace at which the industry can meet its collective net zero targets.

This first of its kind structured collaboration signals a broader move within the industry to tackle climate challenges through united efforts.
