How Honeywell Supports Hotels to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Honeywell's new platform helps mid-market hotels become more sustainable
Honeywell launches INNCOM Direct, a new cloud-based energy management system for hotels to enhance energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint

Honeywell’s technologies are already present in more than 10 million buildings around the world.

These include hotels, military bases, homes and even the Sydney Opera House.

The company has launched a new cloud-based system to help hotels improve their energy efficiency and become more sustainable.

INCOMM Direct is an energy management system that can monitor consumption across properties and automate energy efficiencies.

Billal Hammoud, President and CEO at Honeywell Building Automation, says: “As hotels become more carbon-conscious, they are taking meaningful steps to show they care about their impact on the environment.

“Until now, mid-market hotels faced fewer options when it came to better managing their HVAC systems with automation.

“Now, INNCOM Direct is levelling the playing field with an affordable, cloud-based energy management system.”

About Honeywell

Honeywell International is an American corporation headquartered in North Carolina.

It operates across a wide range of industries including aerospace, building automation, performance materials and technologies and safety and productivity solutions.

In 2023 the company had revenue of US$36bn and 95,000 employees.

Vimal Kapur, Chairman and CEO at Honeywell, says: “Honeywell's deep roots in solving the world’s most difficult environmental, social and governance challenges stem from our team’s strong foundation as an industrial technology innovator and leader.

“But it’s not just about what we’ve done with our innovation. It’s about what we are doing now and what we will do next.”

The company estimates that its solutions will mitigate two billion tonnes of CO₂e between 2023 and 2030.

Why energy efficiency is important in hotels

It's rare someone checks into a hotel room to not leave and visit the surrounding area.

Throughout 2024, there could be more than 30% of US hotel rooms vacant at any time.

HVAC systems are energy intensive and there’s no use in temperature controlling rooms with nobody inside.

The tourism industry is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change – it's difficult to visit the beach or see the glaciers if they no longer exist.

Honeywell’s INCOMM technology for energy efficiency was previously only available to high-end hotel operators.

Mid-market hotels are generally categorised as those with less than 140 rooms.

They provide guests with a more budget-friendly option and the market for them is expected to grow rapidly by 2030.

With less rooms comes a smaller budget, making it harder for smaller hotels to afford energy costs or to invest in solutions to make operations more sustainable.

How INCOMM Direct can support hotels

The cloud-based monitoring system now makes this solution available to mid-market hotels.

It offers quick setup and portfolio analytics that can be accessed from mobile devices or a dashboard.

This can be used for a single hotel property or across an entire portfolio.

INCOMM Direct uses a proprietary detection system to identify empty spaces and adjust the temperature without affecting the comfort of hotel customers.

Unrented guest rooms can be set to heat or cool fully once a guest checks in instead of being temperature controlled whilst vacant.

If a guest leaves their room for an extended period of time, the system can also change the temperature to have less environmental impact, then adjust it automatically upon their return.
