Nikola is transforming transportation with zero-emission solutions, pioneering clean energy innovations and prioritising sustainability in its new report

Nikola, a pioneering company in the transport and energy sectors, is steering the transportation industry towards a net zero future.

The company has released its 2023 Sustainability Impact report, which outlines its plans and ongoing efforts to shift towards sustainable transport solutions.

Nikola’s primary focus is on integrating and investing in clean energy and advanced vehicle technologies.

The first electric vehicle was created in 1832.

This commitment not only promotes a sustainable environment but also ensures safety and diversity within its operations, all directed towards a circular economy approach.

Unpacking Nikola's sustainability efforts

The 2023 Sustainability Impact report underlines a future-oriented perspective on sustainability, considering it a lifestyle that embraces both current needs and future demands.

The report covers various initiatives, including:

Zero emission commitment: Nikola dedicates its resources towards the decarbonisation of Class 8 trucks. These vehicles are major contributors to emissions, and to combat this, Nikola has already launched battery-electric (BE) and hydrogen fuel cell electric (HE) trucks. So far, several hundred units are operational, marking a substantial shift in commercial transportation’s environmental impact.

Significant milestones in 2023: This year, Nikola achieved several key milestones:

  • Successfully commercialised Nikola Tre FCEV, marking the first US-assembled hydrogen Class 8 truck
  • Secured 100 sales orders for hydrogen trucks and expanded its market reach to Canada
  • Introduced the HYLA hydrogen energy brand alongside modular refuelling stations in California, enhancing the hydrogen fuel infrastructure
  • Engaged in partnerships with businesses like PGT Trucking and Nucor to streamline clean energy supply chains
  • Accolades such as the Altair Enlighten Award were received, recognising its contributions to sustainable products.
Diesel exhaust also contains carcinogens that can cause lung and bladder cancer.

Nikola's sustainable innovations

Nikola’s BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) and FCEVs (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles) are designed for heavy-duty commercial applications, significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the commercial transportation sector.

The company also spearheads initiatives in recycling and reusability, notably in battery technology.

In 2023, Nikola repurposed 192 tonnes of batteries and achieved a 100% recycling rate for scrapped lithium-ion batteries.

Its production facilities, including the 670,000-square-foot premises in Coolidge, incorporate advanced eco-friendly technologies.

These range from LED lighting and intelligent energy systems to on-site solar panels, which supplied over 10% of its energy needs this year.

This commitment extends to waste management as well, with the company surpassing its internal targets by attaining a 45% waste diversion rate in its manufacturing processes.

Why Nikola prioritises sustainability

Zero-emission trucks play a critical role in mitigating pollution, especially as trucks account for a disproportionate amount of road transport emissions relative to their numbers.

Electric and hydrogen-powered trucks offer essential benefits like sound environmental compliance, substantial operational cost savings and enhanced public health and quality of life in urban environments.

Electric trucks are not only cleaner but are significantly quieter, delivering a dual benefit of reducing both air and noise pollution, thus ideal for night-time operations in cities.

EV batteries use rare metals, including lithium, copper, cobalt, aluminum, nickel and graphite.

With stringent emission regulations in place globally, Nikola's pursuit in creating a robust line-up of zero emission vehicles ensures compliance and propels the industry towards the 2050 climate neutrality goal, crucial for sustainable economic and environmental health worldwide.

In shaping future transport solutions that respect the planet while enhancing societal welfare and operational performance, Nikola powerfully exemplifies leadership in driving the global transportation industry towards a zero-emission future.
