High voltage: new Schneider Electric CEO Olivier Blum

Digital automation and energy management behemoth Schneider Electric has announced Olivier Blum as its new CEO.

This shift at the top tier of the French multinational, known for its commitment to sustainability, marks a new chapter for the company.

Schneider Electric is not only ranked among the globe's most sustainable firms but also actively integrates sustainable practices. Major French events, such as the 2024 Olympic Games and the Paris marathon, have been enhanced by Schneider's solutions.

Olivier Blum steps into the role previously held by Peter Herweck, who led the company from May 2023.

Despite a tremendous surge in the company's stock value — over 50%, with a 31% increase in 2024 alone, thanks to burgeoning demand for AI-driven energy management solutions and policies promoting electricity use— Peter's time as CEO has concluded earlier than anticipated.

Under the watch of Chairman Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Schneider has risen to command a formidable market value of €137bn (US$149.37bn).

What has Schneider Electric said?

"We are excited to share that Schneider Electric’s Board of Directors decided unanimously to appoint Olivier Blum as Chief Executive Officer to accelerate the execution of our strategy and engage into the next phase of our development," Schneider Electric said on LinkedIn.

"The Board of Directors would like to thank Peter Herweck for his role at the helm of the organisation and his dedication to the Group that he has led for the last 18 months.

"Olivier brings a wealth of knowledge and experience gathered through 30+ years with the company. From sales and marketing roles to the period spent as Chief Strategy & Sustainability Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer, Olivier’s journey took him to his most recent role of leading our largest business, Energy Management. A member of the Executive Committee since 2014 and an AVEVA board director for the past 5 years, Olivier is passionate about technology and innovation, as well as a people-centric leadership style."

Challenges in the run up to Schneider's leadership change

The change in leadership, however, isn’t without its backdrops of controversy and operational hitches.

Reports, including those by JP Morgan analysts, highlight governance disagreements and strategic misalignments which might have precipitated the shift.

Moreover, Schneider Electric faced substantial fines from the French competition authority, with €470m (US$511.77m) paid out for conspiring to fix prices of electrical devices from 2018 to 2021 — a period predating Peter's leadership.

Operational challenges have also shadowed the company, notably affecting its ability to meet escalating demand, particularly in the North American residential market.

These logistical and competitive obstacles have had a complex effect on Schneider's market performance and positioning.

“I am fortunate to hold a unique position in the company, having gained diverse experience through various roles across different geographies,” he said in the interview.

“The fact that I had this combination of being in sales, marketing, product development, then at one point took over a smaller business unit globally, then HR, then chief strategy and sustainability — this combination of experience gives me a different view on my current role and the value of energy management to our customer, and of course to Schneider.”

His multifaceted career allows him to approach his CEO role with a broad perspective, focusing on delivering value through advanced energy management solutions and sustainable practices.
