Lisa Wee from AVEVA showcases how digital strategies are crucial for achieving sustainability in industries across the globe

At Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero, Lisa Wee, the Global Head of Sustainability at AVEVA, captivated attendees with her insights.

Lisa delves into the pivotal roles of data and digital tools in propelling sustainability across diverse sectors. AVEVA, supporting over 20,000 customers, leads initiatives in industries such as energy, food and transportation to align with stringent environmental targets.

Embracing Data for a Sustainable Future

The significance of sustainability paired with digital innovation as catalysts for growth and creativity in business operations is a focal point of Lisa's discussion.

Transitioning from mere commitment to actionable sustainability strategies marks a notable shift. "We’ve gone beyond the point of setting those commitments; we’re really getting into implementation," Lisa emphasises.

Corporate transparency and accountability are now more crucial due to robust regulatory requirements, reflecting increased interest from investors and employees alike.

Targeting Industry Emissions

Lisa highlights the urgent need for industrial decarbonisation, citing that power and industrial emissions comprised over 65% of total global emissions in 2020.

"If we can’t help these sectors to decarbonise quickly, we won’t make significant progress," she asserts, laying out AVEVA’s role in fostering digital platforms that aid in reducing carbon footprints.

AVEVA isn’t just strategising but also practising sustainable operations, aiming for a 50% reduction in its value chain emissions by 2030, and achieving significant milestones along the way.

Green Innovation in Software Development

Lisa sheds light on AVEVA’s initiatives in crafting environmentally friendly software technologies, in collaboration with the Green Software Foundation.

"When we looked, there weren’t many standards for low-carbon software, so we decided to take the lead," she reveals.

The company tailors software functions for efficiency, especially aligning operations to coincide with the availability of renewable energy sources.

"The grid isn’t green 24/7 yet, so we need to optimise for when it is," Lisa explains.

Accelerating Energy Sector Transformation

As for the energy industry, Lisa is excited about the possibilities digital tools offer in expediting environmental objectives.

She points to major companies like bp, which utilise AVEVA’s innovations for sustainable operation alongside compliance with regulation.

Future technology prospects such as hydrogen energy, carbon capture, and modular nuclear technologies benefit immensely from digital advancements like digital twins, which enable cost-effective and risk-reduced development.

Enhanced Collaboration and the Connected Economy

The conversation concludes with an imperative for increased cooperation among stakeholders in the industrial and energy sectors to foster a connected digital economy.

Projects like those by Z Global in California exemplify the successes of a communal data-sharing approach that speeds up decision-making and boosts operational efficiency.

"What we’re seeing is the creation of digital twins and packages of information that span the entire lifecycle of a project — from engineering to operations — creating new efficiencies," Lisa concludes, underscoring the transformative impact of digital solutions in achieving broad environmental goals.
